Building and maintaining relationships online

Due to the lockdown it was easy to disconnect from learning and many students did this, in all subjects and in schools. I call them the lost generation. It was an opportunity missed. The challenge was how to stay connected and make online learning engaging for the students who attend online learning/ 

Most important was to talk to them have interest in what they are thinking and doing. Build bridges first- Don"t go straight  to work although you have missed learning time Connect and show interest in their lives. Then build on that. Congratulate them each time for coming online-and dont growl them for not been there for 6 weeks. If you growl them, you have lost them for another six weeks.

During online lessons let them present and teach . Let them share their work with you and  others online. I discovered quizziz and the students enjoyed this learning platform.

Student voice from another school was that students like to work quietly online  but the teacher must be there to answer questions if needed . AS soon as the teacher left, the student left They don't want the teacher to talk all the time.

I found one on one  sessions work very well with students but it is very time consuming

MyiMaths  evaluation We have started with MyiMaths in class.All students got  a personal log in and every two weeks they got a set activities to do. The program mark and give feedback in a mark book. Teachers can  write comments as well.  Students take a screenshot of the results and file it in their folder as evidence. This program replace Ninja Maths challenge that is paid program. It is a bit different but excellent. Video instruction is unfortunately missing...one of the strengths of Maths Buddy. I set easier work levels and got much better engagement than Ninja Maths challenge we the challenges were to difficult for some students. Most students enjoy it and learn a  lot. The activities is graphic, interactive and progressive. We spend one period every two weeks in class  on this activity and the rest is homework. School attendance

One big factor that effect outcomes is attendance--or lack of attendance-The questions to ask is how big is the problem, how does this effect students, what cause the current problem and how can it be solved this How missing school affects performance According to Education Review Office (ERO), attendance is “directly related to how well learners achieve” . The more they attend, the higher their achievement (including more credits in New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) NCEA). ( Evidence ERO ) ERO states there is no safe level of non-attendance . Even missing just two days a term is linked to lower achievement. Make the student talk

                                                               Make the students talk-- The person who is doing the talking is doing the learning.The strategy is to make them see before you show . Let them tell you Use hooks and opening statements, games, questions to start the conversation. Use proms like what's next, anything more, it that the only answer, silence, what else?, what else?   to keep the conversation going. Us talk moves and question stems to generate conversation.
