Prize giving-Is it counter productive?
Prize giving-Is it counter productive?
A fascinating idea was raised by Silverdale Primary Principal---Cancel prize giving-- because schools is not about sorting and ranking students. This cause a huge outcry and response but it highlighted many education issues and ideas.
The fist idea is about ranking and sorting
His idea
"Schools are not about ranking and sorting. They are about learning and creativity in a safe and caring environment. They are about empowering all children, not just the ones that are strong at the core subjects.
The response
Life is about failing and succeeding. Nobody will strive to achieve if there is no prize giving. This will create a very mediocre society with no winners, achievers and everyone equal at the bottom.
I think we should run the school with no principal, no teachers because some teachers feels traumatised and inferior for not been the leader
The second idea is about motivation
His idea "There is abundant research showing that awards, rewards and other external incentives undermine intrinsic motivation. For the majority of children who don't receive awards, the prize giving spurs boredom, anger or resentment."
"By rewarding a few we find that it discourages the others. We are trying to get our children to succeed because they want to succeed and not because of a reward at the end which is subjective at best," he wrote.
The response
Yep great to celebrate achievement but I LOVE this decision!! I have seen the faces of so many kids who are NEVER "rewarded" at school events, or realise they never will be. They often stop trying after always missing
My belief
Motivation is about the stick and carrot. Now he is taken the carrot away.
The third idea is about reward and punishment
His idea "Rewards – like punishments – are unnecessary when these things are present, and are ultimately destructive in any case.
The response
My belief
The research he mention is only one book written by an author who totally out of touch of reality. fear and prides two basic but strong human emotions and we are motivated to do things either by avoiding punishment or to receive awards. People work for pay.Even volunteers work to get a reward although not monetary. Take that away and the pay check away nobody will work

The response
Silverdale resident Tracey Smith questioned how students would handle progressing through to high school.
"I think many have forgotten that we live in an extremely competitive society. If we don't teach our kids to be the best they can be and learn how to fail sometimes they will be very disillusioned when they hit the real world,"
