Personal learning
Personalised learning-Workshop notes from Ormiston workshop 10 February 2018
Students learn at a different pace. In the old days all the students were on a bus, driven by the bus driver[teacher] and now and again it stopped at the bus stop,[exams] and then carry on with the fulllload, hopefully by the end of the journey they are all still on the bus. At Olmistton College every student have his own car and drive at different speeds in different directions, hopefully some might find their destination on time.
This approached was introduced because of the different abilities of the students when they reach Year 11. Some students complete three credits in a term, many takes a year to complete one standard and then are those who crash their car or got lost on their way and took the wrong direction. With this approach, each student work at their own pace and is not limited by the bus drivers route and speed or slow down by the slow drivers. The important concept is CHOICE and place the student in the driver seat and make them responsible for the own learning. Hopefully, having choice over their speed of learning and pathway will motivate students to improve results
Given students choice in their learning the teachers hope the will become independent learners. First they were given a choice to write internally or externals. later on they have to choose their pathways and take standards that will help them to do Calculus or Statistics or standards that they like and find easier.. Later on students were given a choice to complete the assessment using spheros, k-nex or baby dolls. This was very interesting. It link to the students world of toys and technology and used it in a clever way to make the students more involved. This also makes mathematics more kinetic and interactive and hands on. They got a week to complete the assessment. Students need to consult and discuss with their parents about their choices
There is not whole class teaching anymore. The philosophy is that you miss 80 % of the class anyway because of the range of abilities. The clever ones get bored and the slow ones don't understand and don't listen. Instead, students watch videos made by the teacher and work in workbooks. The hardest part of teaching is getting attention and keeping attention., with this method the problem is solved. The teacher became a facilitator who walked around and ask students how much they have done, where are they in their progress and if the need any help. Instructions for the day is on a slide in Google classroom.Student do their own teaching on fill in their progress themselves in the Vital sheets.
At Olmiston College there are 160 students sitting around in a open learning enviroment working by themselves or in groups on their own tasks. Four teachers walks around or do their own one on ones with students. Students also got 1 lesson a day to do their own independent study.
Some schools applied steaming [or banding] to solve this problem,Other schools got rid of this. There is two totally different approaches and philosophies of streaming students, Thirty years ago gatekeeping[keeping students behind until they reach the level ensured the fact that all the students were capable and at the same level. Failing students got a negative connotation with the result is that all student automatically got push through, ready or not, and arrive at Year 11 with different skill sets and abilities.
How do you teach such a diverse group? Impossible. Personlised learning might be the answer
